Tukwila-based BECU plans to expand its presence in Pierce County next year by adding branches in Tacoma and Gig Harbor.

Its new Pierce County Financial Center is planned at South 23rd Street and South Union Avenue and will be nearly 7,500 square feet.

Employees “will provide financial advice and expertise as well as one-on-one support for opening accounts and transactions involving ATMs, online banking and mobile banking. They will also assist members with mortgages, small business services, investment and trust services, and have access to technology designed to meet members’ needs more quickly and efficiently,” the credit union said in its announcement this month.

The intersection planned for the new branch is home to Navy Federal Credit Union.

BECU media representative Avery FitzPatrick would not confirm that a former Bank of America site at a corner of the intersection would become the new BECU branch. FitzPatrick told The News Tribune on Thursday, Nov. 16, that information about the exact address would be released next year.

The former BOA branch building with drive-thru, 3408 S. 23rd St., was sold Oct. 23 by BOA for $5.5 million to an LLC affiliated with the owners of the nearby Tacoma Central Shopping Center. The building is next door to where a new IHOP (formerly Shari’s) is opening before the year’s end.

Bank of America closed the branch Aug. 3, 2021.

The new Tacoma and Gig Harbor branches will be two of five BECU locations in the state offering teller services. The other teller services branches are the Tukwila Financial Center, Eastside Financial Center and Spokane Division.

The Gig Harbor branch was announced this summer. The branch is coming to The Shops at Harbor Hill (Borgen Boulevard and Harbor Hill Drive) across the parking lot from Costco.

BECU also announced this month that another new branch would open in 2024 in Shoreline. The credit union says the 4,500-square-foot site, on the corner of Ballinger Way Northeast and 19th Avenue Northeast, will serve its more than 18,000 members in the city. It will feature BECU’s “tellerless” layout. BECU employees also will be available to assist members by appointment there.

The credit union has more than 60 locations and more than 1.4 million members. More than 186,000 of its members are in Pierce County.

Current branches include: Tacoma Narrows (5985 Sixth Ave.); Silverdale (9995 Silverdale Way); University Place (3929 Bridgeport Way W.); Puyallup South Hill (3803 S. Meridian); Puyallup 176th (17528 Meridian E., Suite 200); Bonney Lake (21182 state Route 410).

“Expanding BECU’s presence in Tacoma and Shoreline is in direct response to the evolving needs of our members in Pierce and King counties,” said Debbie McLeod, BECU’s vice president of Retail Delivery in a statement. “As we continue to welcome more members to the BECU family, our previous nearby locations were at capacity and we knew we had more to offer.”
