Tacoma Mall planning multimillion-dollar overhaul next year in addition to new ‘Village’
Tacoma Mall shoppers can expect to see plenty of construction work in progress next year as the retail center plans a slate of property upgrades.
Simon, the real estate investment trust that owns the mall, on Tuesday announced plans for “a multimillion-dollar revitalization” for the main mall building.
That’s in addition to the mall’s new two-building restaurant/retail addition called The Village, in the works since the site’s initial redevelopment launched in 2019 with the demolition of its former longtime Sears anchor store site.
Improvements for the mall’s main building announced Tuesday include the following:
▪ Upgraded and redesigned entrances.
▪ Updated food court with new flooring, community tables, and upgraded seating, lighting and color palette.
▪ Refurbishment of restrooms and nursing lounge.
▪ Revamped children’s play area.
▪ More than 100,000 square feet of new flooring throughout the mall as well as new lighting, seating, “and a lighter brighter color palette to enhance each customer’s experience,” according to Tuesday’s announcement.
The work is scheduled to begin next spring, and anticipated to be finished later in the year. The mall will remain open through the process.
The Village, another multimillion-dollar project, is already in the works on site, and is slated to open late next year. The two-building addition in a 26,000-square-foot area on site will be home to several new retailers and restaurants. New tenants announced previously include Shake Shack, Dave’s Hot Chicken, Supreme Dumplings, Simply Thai Restaurant, Gong Cha bubble tea and Happy Lamb Hot Pot.
Recent permit filings with the City of Tacoma show plans for installation of solar panels on The Village’s Building A and Building B.
All of this follows an earlier phase of the mall’s redevelopment, which brought another retail addition that is home to a small-format Kohl’s, as well as Nordstrom Rack, Ulta Beauty and Total Wine & More.
The main mall already has made way for the arrival of new offerings either announced or occurring this year, including Knot Korean Steakhouse, Kura Revolving Sushi, Gregorys Coffee and the return of Candy Tyme.
“As Simon makes strategic investments to meet the evolving needs of our shoppers, we are proud to announce enhancements to ensure that Tacoma Mall will continue to be a premier shopping, dining and entertainment destination that draws in shoppers from throughout the region,” Kelly Hartsell, Simon regional vice president, said in a statement.
“From families enjoying the new play area to visitors relaxing in elevated gathering spaces, these upgrades will significantly enhance the experience for our guests,” Hartsell added.
