Local bank adds University Place branch, new eats at Tacoma Mall, other biz news

Timberland Bank opened a new branch in University Place on Jan. 12, joining locations in Tacoma and Gig Harbor.

The new branch is at 6916 19th St. W. It offers a full range of banking services, including drive-up banking and an ATM, according to a news release. Timberland Bank operates over 20 branches throughout Western Washington.

“We are thrilled to expand our presence in University Place. Many of our customers have been looking forward to this new location,” said Jonathan Fischer, president and chief operating officer of Timberland Bank, in a news release. “This reflects our commitment to invest in our communities. We’re proud to create new local jobs, support area businesses, and serve our customers’ evolving financial needs.”

There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 12 to celebrate the new branch. Timberland Bank’s University Place hours are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Dave’s Hot Chicken opens at the Tacoma Mall

The long-awaited opening of Dave’s Hot Chicken at the Tacoma Mall is finally here. The national chain officially opened its Tacoma location Friday, Jan. 23, as The News Tribune previously reported.

Until now, Dave’s Hot Chicken had only one other Washington location in Seattle.

The chain offers tenders and sliders, available in a range of spice levels from no spice to “Reaper.” The menu includes chicken bites, spicy buffalo mac and cheese and milkshakes.

The Tacoma Mall location is at 4502 S. Steele St., Suite 1670. It’s open 10 a.m. - 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. - midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Local winery opens new tasting room in Gig Harbor

Spruce Hill Winery, a Seattle-based winery started by Mark and Jo Bader, has opened a new tasting room in Gig Harbor, as The News Tribune previously reported.

The official opening was Friday, Jan. 23. The Baders said the space is designed to be cozy and welcoming, with a bar, comfy chairs and a community table meant for large groups.

The winery opened its facilities in Seattle’s SoDo neighborhood in 2023, along with a small tasting room.

The Gig Harbor tasting room, 5229 Olympic Dr., is larger and more “community focused,” the Baders said.

Glasses of white wine and rosé start at $12, red wine glasses start at $18 and bottles range from $20 to $38. The tasting room offers wine flights starting at $20 a person, along with local meat and cheese pairings.

It’s open Fridays 3-7 p.m., Saturdays noon to 7 p.m. and Sundays noon to 4 p.m.

Tacoma thrift store closes after three years

Black Sheep Resale, a trans- and queer-owned thrift store near the Tacoma Mall, is closing its doors, The News Tribune previously reported.

The store was set to close Jan. 15, but according to a recent Instagram post, Black Sheep Resale will be open one last day on Saturday, Jan. 24 from noon to 7 p.m. Everything will be 75% off.

The store is at 4020 S. Steele St., No. 106 and has been open for three years. Black Sheep Resale sells a variety of vintage decor, clothes and accessories. There’s also a small community area inside the store with games, books and zines.

The space is welcoming to the LGBTQ+ community, with large pride flags adorning the storefront.
