Another former home of a long-departed retail chain could soon have a new tenant.

The former Big Lots just off 72nd Street East in the Tahoma Vista Shopping Center closed in 2024. A new permit application filed June 9 indicated what could be coming next.

An initial tenant improvement application was filed for Crunch Fitness, and the estimated cost of the work is $1.25 million, according to the filing with the City of Tacoma.

Work at the site in anticipated to start in August, the filing noted. It would be the fitness chain’s second site in Tacoma, with its other location at 5401 Sixth Ave. at the Sixth Avenue Plaza Shopping Center.

That site opened in spring 2025.

Crunch Fitness also has locations in Lakewood, Silverdale and Vancouver, Washington. Its website shows new locations “coming soon” for Lacey and a second one in Vancouver.

The former Big Lots closed at the site in the fall of 2024; its closure was announced before the chain filed for bankruptcy protection in September of that year.

Crunch Fitness would join Grocery Outlet and Urban Air Trampoline and Adventure Park, among other businesses, at the shopping center.

The center was originally developed for and anchored by Kmart in the late 1960s. The Kmart store closed in the fall of 2017.

No further details were immediately available on the new fitness center.
