More than 70 new COVID-19 cases reported Friday in Pierce County

Pierce County reported 73 new COVID-19 cases Friday and no new deaths.

The county’s totals are 51,811 cases and 624 deaths since the first confirmed coronavirus case was reported in March 2020.

Pierce County has added four new COVID-19 related deaths since July 8:

A woman in her 60s from Spanaway.

A man in his 60s from Tacoma.

A woman in her 60s from University Place.

A man in his 20s from Tacoma.

The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department said in its Friday update that in the past six weeks, of the 149 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in Pierce County, most were known to be unvaccinated, with the vaccine status of a few of those hospitalized unknown.

The county no longer assigns underlying condition status to individual deaths it reports and instead counts underlying conditions as part of a percentage of the total number of deaths, which as of July 13 was 68.9 percent.

Pierce County’s 14-day case rate per 100,000 was 67.1 as of July 14, up from 64 reported as of July 9.

New hospitalizations per 100,000 over seven days is currently 2.9 per 100,000, compared with the state’s rate of 2.8.

Test positivity was at 2.8 percent for the week of June 27-July 3, down from 3.1 percent from the week of June 20-26.

More information on testing is available on the health department’s website.
