Name of boy who died after near drowning at Tacoma pool released

Pierce County medical examiners have released the name of the 8-year-old boy who died Thursday after being found unresponsive last week at the Stewart Heights Pool.

Nguyen Tran of Tacoma was unresponsive when he was pulled from the pool July 27 and was taken to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, where he died a week later.

The boy had been at the pool with a daycamp from Peace Community Center, Metro Parks Tacoma spokesman Hunter George said Thursday. The nonprofit community center hosts its summer day camps at McCarver Elementary School on Tacoma’s Hilltop.

The boy was in water less than 4 feet deep when he was found unresponsive about 1 p.m. July 27, though he did still have a pulse.
