Driver identified after fatal crash into train. Investigators believe he didn’t see it

A man who died after driving into a slow-moving train in Tacoma early Tuesday has been identified as Wesley Evans.

Investigators believe Evans, 28, of Spanaway, did not see the slow-moving train at Lincoln Avenue and Milwaukee Way because it was dark and there were no flashing lights.

The collision took place about 2:45 a.m.

Evans was the only person inside his Acura at the time of the crash.

The empty Tacoma Rail, which was equipped with reflective markings, was moving about 5 mph, Tacoma Public Utilities spokeswoman Chris Gleason said.

The 7,035-foot train is made up of 35 cars. Evans’ vehicle struck between the 22nd and 23rd car.

“We are deeply saddened and express our sincere sympathies to the driver’s family and friends,” Tacoma Rail superintendent Dale King said.
