Two cases of COVID-19 confirmed at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma
The University of Puget Sound on Thursday announced “two self-reports from campus community members of confirmed cases of COVID-19.”
Neither individual has been on the Tacoma campus since March 6, according to a statement posted on the school website from Kelly Brown, director of Counseling, Health, and Wellness Services.
One of the infected people has been away from campus all semester. The other had been on campus as of March 6 but has been isolated since March 9, according to the statement.
The university would not provide more information, citing privacy provisions.
“Professionals from CHWS and the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department are working to identify any campus community members with whom the affected individuals indicate they may have come in contact and will advise those individuals of steps or precautions they should take,” according to the statement.
The university stopped in-person classes when the coronavirus became widespread but is allowing some students experiencing hardships to continue to live on campus. There are now fewer than 150 students living on campus.
“We have moved all course instruction to remote delivery, arranged for employees to work remotely to the fullest extent possible, and reduced the number of students who are permitted to remain in residence halls,” according to the university.
University officials said they remain in contact with those who tested positive and that they “are recovering well.”
