Tacoma offers ‘food pick-up priority’ zones to help local businesses amid coronavirus outbreak
As more food service businesses rely on delivery and takeout orders to stay afloat, the city of Tacoma wants to make it easier for local businesses to reach their customers amid the COVID-19 outbreak.
Starting Tuesday, the city is offering temporary loading zone signs at no cost for businesses to put in front of their shops.
A restaurant, for example, can request a sign to designate a space for customers picking up food orders.
“This program was created in an effort to support the evolving needs of the community and particularly food service businesses through this unprecedented time,” according to a city news release.
The sign requests will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
The deployment of signs will continue until Gov. Jay Inslee’s current “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” restrictions are lifted and possibly through a “period of economic recovery,” according to the city.
Also starting Tuesday, the city is offering to establish temporary ADA parking spots for people who have an ADA placard but might have trouble finding a place to park near their place of work.
After the city suspended on-street parking paid parking and ticketing in March, “some areas have experienced higher than normal occupancies for on-street parking space,” the city said.
A loading zone sign or ADA spot can be requested by calling the city at 253-591-5371 or filling out this online form.
