Nice while it lasted. Paid street parking resumes in downtown Tacoma as murals come down

Drivers once again will be required to pay for on-street parking in downtown Tacoma starting Monday, July 6.

The city temporarily suspended pay station operations downtown in March due to COVID-19 impacts.

Now that Pierce County is in Phase 2 of Gov. Jay Inslee’s Safe Start reopening plan, the city is back to enforcing the on-street pay station system.

“On-street parking will once again require payment where meters are present, and all timed signage will begin to be monitored by the City’s Parking Services,” according to a press release sent by the city Tuesday.

Also July 6, a new “touchless” parking payment option will go live through a mobile parking app.

“The Flowbird App allows users to pay for parking, under posted time limits, with an iOS or Android device. The app can be used for both on-street paid parking, as well as at City-owned off-street parking lots and garages,” according to the city.

For more information on the new app, visit cityoftacoma.org/parking or call 253-627-4401.

Other programs the city rolled out during COVID-19 closures, including the establishment of temporary parking for those with an ADA placard and short-term loading zones for businesses, will continue throughout Phase 2 and beyond through the recovery period.

People might notice other changes downtown.

Wooden boards that were put up around businesses and painted over with murals are being taken down. The Downtown Tacoma Partnership, the group behind the rapid mural program, is considering if there is another way to display the murals, executive director David Schroedel said Tuesday.
