Fire erupts in Tacoma’s Wapato Hills Park, threatening nearby homes

A brush fire in a wooded area of Wapato Hills Park in Tacoma is spreading, threatening homes in the area as of Tuesday night.

The fire erupted Tuesday afternoon in a wooded area on the 5600 block of Tacoma Mall Boulevard and throughout the day spread to the southwest toward Wapato Street and South 64th Street.

The Tacoma Fire Department is asking people to avoid the area.

“We are going door to door talking residents. We are not directing an evacuation,” Tacoma Fire said on Twitter.

A number of fires across Pierce County ignited Tuesday, causing evacuations in Bonney Lake.
