Man killed in rollover crash in South Hill identified by Pierce County medical examiner

A 30-year-old man who was killed in South Hill last month when his pickup truck drifted off a road and struck a mailbox and large boulder was identified Friday.

Johnathen Piedra, of SeaTac, died Jan. 29 near the 15200 block of 91st Avenue Court East, according to a news release from the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office. The office said the cause and manner of Piedra’s death are pending.

The crash occurred about 6:55 p.m. near the junction of 152nd Street East and 92nd Avenue East, Pierce County deputies said. The truck rolled and came to a rest on its passenger side about 25 feet from where it struck the mailbox and boulder in front of 9220 152nd St. E.

Pierce County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Sgt. Darren Moss said the front end and passenger compartment of the truck was significantly damaged. Deputies said traffic investigators believe the truck was traveling at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway and struck the boulder.

Piedra was declared dead at the scene of the crash. He was the only person in the truck.
