Truck driver killed after colliding with semi on southbound I-5 in Tacoma

A driver is dead after his work truck rear-ended a semi-truck on southbound Interstate 5 just north of South 84th Street in Tacoma on Tuesday afternoon.

The collision occurred about 2:41 p.m. when a landscaping truck hit the back end of a semi-truck that was slowing down in the far right lane, according to Washington State Patrol spokesperson Trooper Robert Reyer.

The work truck appeared to be moving in excess of 60 miles per hour when it hit the semi, according to troopers on the scene. Traffic was slowing for another accident ahead, he said.

The driver was the only person in the work truck. Fire department crews extricated him, but he was declared dead at the scene, Reyer said.

As of 3:45 p.m., southbound traffic on I-5 was backed up nearly to the state Route 16 interchange.

It was the second fatal truck collision on Interstate 5 on in the Tacoma area Tuesday.
