A BNSF freight train derailed at the Port of Tacoma on Tuesday afternoon, striking power lines and blocking traffic.

The derailment occurred at about 1 p.m. near the intersection of the Port of Tacoma Road and Lincoln Avenue, according to Tacoma Fire Department. No injuries were reported.

Two cars with empty containers that were destined for the port derailed, BNSF spokesperson Lena Kent said in an email. BNSF had resources on the way to clean up and restore the the tracks to service.

Traffic was blocked on both roadways, Port of Tacoma spokesperson Carol Bua said. She said she wasn’t sure when the roads would be reopened. The train also hit a utility pole, temporarily knocking out power for three Tacoma Public Utilities customers.

What caused the derailment is under investigation, Kent said. It occurred in the same area where a train derailed in September.
