6 killed, 1 in critical condition after crash on SR-509 on Tacoma Tideflats, WSP says
Six people have died and one more is in critical condition after a horrific wreck on the Tacoma Tideflats on Sunday morning, according to Washington State Patrol.
Five people died at the scene of the crash, trooper John Dattilo said. He said it wasn’t immediately clear if the sixth person died at the scene or while being transported to an area hospital.
About 11:15 a.m. Sunday, a white BMW SUV with two people was headed north on state Route 509 in Fife. Meanwhile, a Kia hatchback, occupied by seven people, was headed east on Alexander Avenue. The two vehicles then crashed at the intersection of the two roads.
The two people in the BMW are at an area hospital in stable condition, Dattilo said. The crash has blocked all of Route 509, he said via social media.
Dattilo added that the State Patrol’s major accident investigation team is investigating the incident.
The Washington State Department of Transportation said northbound SR-509 would be closed until further notice, with traffic being detoured off the highway at Port of Tacoma Road.
