Tacoma man shot and killed in Hilltop area last week identified by medical examiner
A 45-year-old man killed during a shooting last week in the Hilltop neighborhood of Tacoma was identified Monday by the Pierce County medical examiner. A suspect is in jail, but he is not being held on suspicion of murder.
Shawn Joyner, of Tacoma, died Aug. 15 from multiple gunshot wounds, the medical examiner’s office said in a news release. His death was ruled a homicide.
Shortly after midnight, Tacoma police found Joyner in the 1400 block of Earnest South Brazill Street, police said in a press release. They tried to save his life, but he died at the scene.
Shortly after police arrived, they found a 19-year-old man in the area, according to court records. He was arrested on suspicion of murder and booked into Pierce County Jail.
Prosecutors have not yet charged him in connection to Joyner’s death, pending further investigation.
He remains in custody on another matter, awaiting a competency hearing. He was allegedly found carrying a pistol illegally in late June, court records said.
On the night of June 26, Tacoma police responded to reports of gunfire near People’s Park. Court records said they found him hiding in a driveway, lying next to a vehicle and behind a trash can in the area. He allegedly stashed a black pistol with his sweatshirt under a car.
He was released at the time, and was arrested again last week after the shooting.
