Victims identified in frightening fatal crash at Tacoma Narrows Bridge toll plaza
Two people killed in a crash Friday afternoon at the Tacoma Narrows Bridge’s toll plaza were identified as residents of Bremerton, according to the Washington State Patrol.
In a memo to the media Saturday, the WSP said that Jeremy Kirkmeyer, 33, and Torrey Kirkmeyer, 30, were killed after the 2017 Chevrolet Sonic they were riding in was struck by a 2008 Ford Explorer and hit a safety barrier.
The Chevrolet had been traveling eastbound on State Route 16 in the second lane when the Ford, which was heading the same direction in the fourth lane, crossed into the Chevrolet’s lane and hit it, according to the WSP.
WSP trooper John Dattilo told The News Tribune on Friday that the Ford allegedly had its cruise control on and didn’t slow down before impact. Both occupants of the Ford were injured and taken to a hospital.
The incident was reported at roughly 2 p.m. The toll plaza was temporarily closed, although eastbound lanes remained open following the crash.
Drugs or alcohol were not listed as factors in the crash, which the WSP was investigating.
