Source: Central Tacoma’s Hobby Lobby store will soon close

Tacoma’s Hobby Lobby is closing in June, a store employee confirmed Saturday.

The contents of the store, located at 3130 S. 23rd Street in Tacoma, will be sent to other stores, the employee said. A query sent to the company’s headquarters in Oklahoma City was not immediately returned Saturday.

Founded in 1972, Hobby Lobby has more than 900 stores in the United States. It sells home décor, fabrics and sewing accessories, crafting materials, art supplies and floral accessories.

The Tacoma store opened in the former Top Foods & Drugs location in 2014.

The chain, which is not open on Sundays, doesn’t shy away from overt Christian messaging. The company runs holiday messages at Christmas and Easter.

“These ads don’t include sale items or special pricing,” company president Steve Green is quoted on the company’s website. “We just want to let people know that we love our Lord.”

The billionaire Green family which owns the chain partly bankrolled the “He gets us” ads that ran during this year’s Super Bowl.

The company has drawn ire from reproductive rights activists and the LGBTQ community for its efforts to deny Hobby Lobby employees birth control coverage and the use of bathrooms based on their gender identity.

Hobby Lobby has other stores in Lakewood, Puyallup and Federal Way.
