TAPCO Credit Union has broken ground on a new full-service branch in the Frederickson area.

The new branch, 5320 176th St. E., as well as offering financial services with a drive-thru, will include a dedicated community space. A retail space also will be available for lease, according to its June 6 Facebook post.

The building will replace the credit union’s nearby branch in the Canyon Crossing Shopping Center anchored by Safeway.

The credit union’s annual report page noted the anticipated branch opening is next year. The site of the new credit union is in the same area as Amazon Go and Superchix, both of which opened in 2023.

“This branch is not just a symbol of growth and progress; it is a testament to the enduring strength of TAPCO and the communities we serve,” TAPCO CEO Justin Martin said in remarks Thursday.

“As we embark on this new chapter in our history, let us do so with gratitude for our past, excitement for our future, and a renewed dedication to serving the needs of our members and our community,” he added.

Martin has served in his position since January 2022.

County records show TAPCO purchased the site in September 2021 for $1.1 million.

The credit union marks 90 years of service this year. It was founded in 1934, with its first location under the stairs in Old City Hall in downtown Tacoma. It was originally established as City Credit Union by nine city employees and has grown to six branches across Pierce County, with assets of more than $650 million and more than 30,000 members.
