Watch: Woman rescued after a swift current left her stranded in the Puyallup River

A woman seen struggling in the fast-moving waters of the Puyallup River was rescued by Pierce County deputies.

Swiftwater-trained deputies from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about a woman being strained in the river at about 12:49 p.m. Tuesday.

First responders soon arrived and tossed the woman a life vest and ropes before a detective from the swiftwater rescue team swam to the area and retrieved her.

Pierce County Sheriff’s Sgt. Darren Moss said the woman, who was not identified, was last listed as stable after being treated at the scene.

The Swiftwater Rescue Team features 26 members on its staff and has “rescued dozens” of people over the past five years, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.

Puyallup River, which is flowing faster this time of year, was running at about 1,300 cubic feet per second when the woman was rescued on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
