The Hylebos Bridge is closed due to a malfunction as of Nov. 27, 2024.
The Hylebos Bridge is closed due to a malfunction as of Nov. 27, 2024.

Update, Dec. 18: “The Hylebos Bridge (located off East 11th Street in the Tacoma Tideflats) has reopened to vehicular traffic,” the city announced in a news release.

Original post: For the second time in as many months, the Hylebos Bridge is closed to vehicle traffic because of a malfunction.

“The City of Tacoma’s Public Works Engineering Division is working with a contracting crew to remedy the issue,” the city said in a statement Wednesday. “The bridge will remain open to shipping vessels until a repair can be made.”

The Tacoma drawbridge, off East 11th Street in the Tideflats, closed in early October following a malfunction. The bridge previously was shut off from cars for nearly a month because of the failure of an underwater cable system.

The Hylebos, one of Tacoma’s two movable bridges, was rehabilitated in 2012 and built in 1939, according to the city. It also faced repairs in early 2024 after a vessel hit it in fall 2023.
