Busy Tacoma street to close for construction that will connect downtown to waterfront
Tacoma’s South 21st Street will be closed between Jefferson Avenue and Pacific Avenue beginning Wednesday for six to eight weeks as city crews begin construction for the Prairie Line Trail Project.
The project will connect downtown to the waterfront and several city and regional trails, according to the City of Tacoma on its website.
The city says the construction on South 21st Street entails sewer improvements, concrete pavement, pavement restoration and final roadway construction.
The I-705 and state Route 509 interchange adjacent to Pacific Avenue will remain open, the city says. Drivers are asked to follow all posted detour signs in the area.
Around that time, ramps will be closed March 24-28 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. along northbound Interstate 705 and under the state Route 509 interchange for maintenance work, The News Tribune reported. City public works staff will manage detours while carrying out graffiti removal, pavement repairs, vegetation management and sign maintenance in the area, according to the city.
