Northbound I-5 could see heavy congestion through DuPont after 10 p.m. on July 25 and 26 as work continues to build a roundabout on Steilacoom-DuPont Road.

Between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Friday and Saturday, crews will be removing temporary structures that were put in place to build a bridge on the new Steilacoom-DuPont overpass, part of the roundabout project, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

“The new overpass will be completed in 2026 as part of the I-5 Mounts Road to Steilacoom-DuPont Road Corridor Improvements project,” the statement reads.

The project, part of the state’s broader effort to widen I-5 and add new high-occupancy vehicle lanes on the highway, will cost around $233.3 million.

Northbound I-5 will be reduced to one lane, and drivers will be detoured through the Steilacoom-DuPont Road off- and on-ramps, the department said in a statement.

The Steilacoom-DuPont Road overpass will be closed during that time, and travelers on the road headed to northbound I-5 will be detoured to southbound I-5 to exit at Center Drive and return to northbound I-5. Drivers on northbound I-5 needing to exit at Steilacoom-DuPont Road will detour to 41st Division Drive and return to southbound I-5 to reach the exit, WSDOT said in a statement.

The department is encouraging travelers to add one hour to their drive time if they anticipate passing through the area.
