  • Amazon files state WARN: 2,198 Washington roles cut, including 13 in Sumner, 1 in DuPont.
  • Layoffs tied to 16,000 corporate cuts; affected staff have 90 days to seek internal roles.
  • Pierce County lost two Go stores earlier; other firms also file WARNs in recent days.

Amazon’s latest layoff notice filed with the state of Washington offers a breakdown of how many jobs in Pierce County are affected.

According to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed Jan. 29, 13 employees in Sumner and one employee in DuPont at Amazon facilities in those cities are set to see their jobs eliminated no later than April 28.

A total of 2,198 workers are being eliminated in this round of layoffs by the e-retail giant in Washington state. The total includes 116 remote employees “residing within the state of Washington,” the notification added.

The rest of the positions are in Seattle, Bellevue, Redmond, Kent, Pasco, Arlington and Spokane.

The layoffs are part of a staff reduction of 16,000 corporate jobs Amazon announced last week.

The company stated the move was to “strengthen our organization by reducing layers, increasing ownership, and removing bureaucracy.“

According to a memo sent to employees, most of the affected workers would have 90 days “to look for a new role internally ... . Then, for teammates who are unable to find a new role at Amazon or who choose not to look for one, we’ll provide transition support including severance pay, outplacement services, health insurance benefits (as applicable), and more.”

The latest cuts followed the news that Amazon was ending its Go and Fresh physical stores, with Pierce County losing its two Go stores in East Pierce County, affecting 30 workers at the two sites.

Last fall, Amazon announced another swath of job cuts totaling thousands in the state, including one position in DuPont and another in Puyallup, along with two in Thurston County at its Lacey fulfillment center.

Amazon wasn’t the only employer with WARN filings submitted in recent days.

T-Mobile on Monday filed a notice of layoffs affecting 393 at various locations in the state, while International Paper Company on Jan. 30 announced it was closing its Union Gap box facility in April, affecting 102 workers, “unless they become employed elsewhere at International Paper,” the filing stated.
