Man who shot at sheriff’s deputies transported from hospital, booked into jail
The 23-year-old man who fired at Pierce County sheriff’s deputies during an incident Sunday was released from the hospital and booked into the Pierce County Jail Thursday evening.
Skyler Cantrell was booked into the Pierce County Jail around 6:30 p.m. on suspicion of two counts of first degree burglary, one count of second degree criminal trespassing and one count of resisting arrest, according to jail records.
Cantrell also had multiple outstanding felony warrants linked to prior offenses, including “assault 2nd degree, eluding, and escape from community custody,” according to a Lakewood Police Department press release.
The ordeal began at 2 a.m. Sunday when a deputy observed Cantrell slumped over in a vehicle near 72nd Street East and 9th Avenue Court East, the release said. Deputies positioned their vehicles around his car while he slept to prevent his escape.
Cantrell awoke and rammed the surrounding vehicles until he found an escape route and fled. Multiple shots followed. No deputies were hit by gunfire, the release said.
Just a few minutes later, authorities located Cantrell’s vehicle crashed and abandoned at a home in the 900 block of 85th Street East.
“Multiple calls came in from nearby residences stating a male had shown up on their property asking for help and appeared to have blood on him,” the release said. “It was also reported that a male matching the description of our suspect, had entered homes and left after being confronted.”
The next day, South Sound Gang Task Force officers received a tip about Cantrell’s whereabouts. At around 12:30 p.m. Monday, officers found Cantrell in the 900 block of 75th Avenue Court East and took him into custody.
Cantrell was shot during the initial confrontation with officers. He was transported to the hospital upon his arrest.
