Here’s a sneak peek inside Gig Harbor’s new FISH Food Bank, what’s left to fundraise

Gig Harbor Peninsula FISH Food Bank and Community Services is hosting a virtual hardhat tour this weekend for its new building.

The virtual tour is at 10:30 a.m., Saturday April 2 via Facebook Live on the GHP FISH Facebook page. Attendees will see the progress of the facility and learn more about how the community can help the organization.

The walls for this facility began to go up last November. Construction on the new facility is expected to be completed by late spring or early summer of 2022.

The nonprofit currently rents space at 4425 Burnham Dr. The new facility is a few hundred feet away.

“With only $300,000 to reach our goal, we’re excited to invite the community to get us over the finish line,” Amy Gartlan, a member of the building oversight committee and co-chair of the Building the Future capital campaign said in a press release from the nonprofit.

They’ve raised $7.7 million of their $8 million goal.

Attendees will not need a Facebook account to watch the tour and it will be edited and posted on YouTube on the GHP FISH Food Bank page for anyone to watch later.

“The need is greater than ever,” Board President Ron Coen said in the press release.

“Food bank use is increasing dramatically. For the past two years of Covid precautions, folks have had to wait outside for prepacked bags and limited personalized selections. When the new building opens this summer, people once again will come inside to ‘shop’ for their own groceries and select donated clothing and small household items. There also will be much-needed space for storage, confidential conversations, meetings and more,” the press release said.
