Emergency repairs to close Narrows Bridge lanes again this weekend
You guessed it: two lanes of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge are closing again this weekend.
If you must cross the bridge to Gig Harbor this weekend, aim for Saturday. Two lanes of the westbound bridge will shut down starting at Pearl Street from 7:30 a.m. Sunday, according to a news release from the Washington State Department of Transportation.
The lanes will reopen when crews complete repairs, which is expected “before the afternoon commute Monday,” the release said.
The two right lanes of the bridge will be open to traffic, along with the Jackson Avenue on-ramp to westbound state Route 16.
The work is two-fold, according to the release: some crews will repair joints on the aging bridge, and others will repair the left lanes of the highway approaching the bridge.
The westbound span of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge was built in 1950 and needs work, WSDOT and state lawmakers agree, but a lack of funding has stymied improvements.
Transportation crews have had to make a series of emergency repairs in recent years, which tend to bottleneck traffic on the commuter-heavy route. WSDOT had to make such repairs three times last year, McClatchy reported. The most recent repairs occurred last week.
