Teen killed after vehicle went down ravine near Gig Harbor has been identified
A former Gig Harbor High School student killed Wednesday evening after his vehicle fell down a steep embankment has been identified by the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Daniel P. Hallstrom, 16, died from blunt head and torso trauma, according to the Medical Examiner’s public information portal. His manner of death was ruled an accident.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said Hallstrom was driving fast and did not make a corner near the 5600 block of 98th Avenue Northwest, near Kopachuck Middle School, The News Tribune reported. His vehicle was found significantly damaged in a ravine about 100 yards down a steep embankment, Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One spokesperson Patrick Phillips told The News Tribune Thursday.
The Peninsula School District reported that the victim of the single-car crash had withdrawn from Gig Harbor High School and was not currently enrolled at the school.
“We extend our deepest sympathy to the student’s family, friends, and teachers,” Gig Harbor High School Principal Bob Marshall wrote in a message to staff, students and families on Thursday. He wrote that his office along with counselors and teachers are available to support all who are processing this loss.
The Medical Examiner’s Office reported that the crash occurred at 6:32 p.m. Wednesday.
