Sumner is expected to have new apartment buildings ready for potential tenants next year.

The East Sumner Apartment project is planned for two different sites along 60th Street East. The site northwest of the 162nd Avenue East and 60th Street East intersection will have 102 apartments total. The site northeast of the same intersection will have 60 multi-family units total.

The west site will have six, three-story multi-family buildings. It will also have a recreation center with a pool. There will be on-site parking, landscaping and open areas. Out of the 102 units, 51 will have two bedrooms and the other half will have one.

Both sites will have walkway connections to public sidewalks as well as on-site stormwater management.

The property owner, Timberlane Partners II, LLC, has been in communication with the city, and they are hoping to see at least 20 percent of the units become affordable housing, said Chrissanda Walker, assistant planner for the city of Sumner.

“We have not yet established that, but I know that the property owner is interested in doing that,” Walker said.

The west site will take over the Windmill Gardens’ greenhouse area, but Windmill Village will remain in tact. The Bistro, gift shop and floral studio, New Appearances salon and spa as well as the Tea Madame tea shop will stay.

Walker said construction is expected to finish by spring 2023. Cost estimates for the project have yet to be finalized.

The project is not the only large housing development underway in the area. Blocks away, the Nemeth Mixed-Use Development Planned Action project, near Aversano’s Italian Restaurant at 6015 Parker Rd. E., will bring seven buildings with a total of 105 apartment units to the city.

New development coming to the city of Sumner may bring a total of 102 apartment units by spring 2023.
