Homicide suspect, police dog critically injured after pursuit and shootout in Tacoma

Tacoma police critically injured a homicide suspect during a shootout early Thursday, according to the Lakewood Police Department.

A K-9 dog was also critically injured and later died.

The incident started about 1:20 a.m. when officers spotted a homicide suspect driving and tried to pull him over.

After a short pursuit, the suspect crashed and took off running from the scene.

Police used a tracking dog to find him and gunfire was exchanged in the 3600 block of South M Street.

Both the suspect and K-9 were struck.

The K-9’s handler received minor injuries.

The suspect is wanted in connection with a shootout that occurred Wednesday afternoon in the Department of Licensing parking lot on South Yakima Avenue where a 28-year-old man was killed.

Lakewood police and the Washington State Patrol are investigating the officer-involved shooting.
