Man killed in Spanaway by racing drivers is identified

A 58-year-old man who died Wednesday after a driver who was racing another car struck his pickup in Spanaway has been identified.

John Lund, of Puyallup, was pronounced dead after the collision near state Route 7 and 174th Street South.

The racing drivers, a 17-year-old Tacoma boy and 28-year-old Spanaway man, were both arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide and reckless driving.

Pierce County prosecutors are weighing charges against both drivers.

They were speeding eastbound on 174th Street just before 1 p.m. when the teenager passed the other car, ran a stop sign and struck Lund’s pickup truck as it traveled north on Route 7, authorities said.

Both the car and pickup truck rolled about 100 feet before coming to rest near a bank parking lot.

The other driver left the scene, but the State Patrol arrested him shortly afterward.

The teenage driver and a 16-year-old girl riding in his car were taken to St. Joseph Medical Center with unknown injuries.
