Shooting in Tacoma stemmed from gunman propositioning victim’s girlfriend, records say

A 47-year-old man shot someone in Tacoma after propositioning the victim’s girlfriend and being refused, according to court documents.

Pierce County prosecutors have charged the suspected shooter with first-degree assault, attempting to elude and possessing a stolen firearm.

He pleaded not guilty Friday and was ordered held on $100,000 bail.

The 32-year-old victim is in critical but stable condition.

The incident started about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 8700 block of South Hosmer Street.

Charging papers give this account:

The victim was standing with his girlfriend and a few others when a man approached them and said he was looking for someone. He then offered the victim’s girlfriend money in exchange for sexual favors, records say.

She declined the offer and her boyfriend told the man to leave them alone.

An argument broke out and the man allegedly pulled out a gun and fired three times, striking the victim.

He then fled in a Lincoln Navigator.

Officers responding to the scene spotted the vehicle at a stop light and tried to pull it over, but the driver led them on a high-speed pursuit.

The chase ended when the driver lost control trying to make a left turn and crashed into a fence in the 1700 block of South 35th Street.

He was taken into custody after a brief foot chase.

Detectives found a handgun near the crash scene that had been stolen from Louisiana.

The suspected shooter was in Louisiana at the time the gun was stolen, records say.
