Tacoma police arrest man suspected of murder in South End fatal shooting

Tacoma police on Tuesday arrested a 35-year-old man suspected in the fatal shooting of a man earlier this month in the city’s South End.

The man was arrested just after 2:30 p.m. at a residence in Tacoma, according to a news release from Tacoma Police Department. Officers took the man into custody with the assistance of a SWAT team. He was booked into Pierce County Jail for investigation of second-degree murder.

Police said he is suspected in the Oct. 9 killing of Gregory Hughes, 51. The victim was found shot around 2 a.m. after dispatchers received multiple reports of gunfire in the 200 block of South 80th Street. According to a news release, officers found Hughes unresponsive. Police said he died at the scene despite life-saving efforts.

The Pierce County medical examiner later found that the victim died of multiple bullet wounds.

It’s unclear what led up to the shooting or how the man arrested Tuesday was identified as a suspect. Police said detectives and crime scene technicians identified him and developed probable cause for his arrest
