Argument over motorcycle turned deadly. Now a Pierce County man is charged with murder

A 32-year-old man is accused of shooting two men, leaving one of them dead, in Graham on Monday during a dispute over a motorcycle.

Pierce County prosecutors charged Keith Allen Scott Canedy with two counts of second-degree murder, first-degree assault and first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, court records show.

Canedy was arrested on Sept. 24 in Oregon after prosecutors sought a warrant for his arrest.

Following his extradition, Canedy was booked into Pierce County Jail on Thursday. A plea of not guilty was entered on Canedy’s behalf at his arraignment Friday afternoon. Pierce County Superior Court Commissioner Philip Thornton set his bail at $2 million, court records show.

Law enforcement officers located his 2013 Ford F150 truck after detectives learned he was traveling south with his girlfriend, according to charging documents. Canedy was held in the Clackamas County Jail, just south of Portland, before being extradited to Pierce County.

Charging details

Pierce County deputies were dispatched at 1:44 a.m. to the 20700 block of 92nd Avenue East for reports of a shooting. One of the victims was being taken to a hospital. The other sustained a gunshot wound to the head, charging documents show.

Deputies saw a motorcycle just south of the crime scene and tried to stop it after they were advised it might be involved. The rider drove off and was not detained, prosecutors wrote.

The victim, a 36-year-old man, was declared dead at the scene, prosecutors wrote. The identity of the victim has not been released.

The second victim, a 48-year-old man, was driven to the fire station at 187th and Meridian East before he was taken to a hospital. He had serious injuries but is expected to survive, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies spoke to a witness who said she was in her RV when she heard multiple vehicles stop outside. She heard arguing and then gunshots. She then saw the 36-year-old man lying on the ground. The 48-year-old man, who was injured, said that “Keith” shot the now-deceased victim in the face, prosecutors wrote.

The witness said the argument was over a motorcycle, and she saw “Keith’s” gray Chevrolet Silverado drive away. She also heard two people believed to be friends with “Keith” drive away on the motorcycle. Prosecutors wrote that Canedy was identified as the alleged shooter.

A witness said that he was at his house when both victims showed up. The 36-year-old man said someone who lived down the street had stolen his motorcycle. While the witness was speaking to the victims, a motorcycle pulled into the area, documents show.

The victims went to the area where the motorcycle pulled up and came back soon after. The witness heard another car pull up with a woman yelling, asking for the 48-year-old man’s location. When the man responded, the witness heard gunshots while he was inside his home, prosecutors wrote.

The witness saw a new 2024 Chevrolet Silverado “Bison” edition leaving the area. The witness confirmed the truck belonged to Canedy because it was brand new and a rare edition, prosecutors wrote. He alleged the gunshots came from the truck, prosecutors wrote. The witness then took the 48-year-old man to the fire station.

Detectives spoke to the 48-year-old man who said his motorcycle was stolen. He said he was “shot over it,” prosecutors wrote.

The stolen motorcycle was a 2024 Yamaha that was reportedly registered to Canedy. Detectives spoke to Canedy’s mother who said she kicked Canedy out of her home on Sunday. She said that Canedy was the only one who would drive the truck because it was so expensive, documents show.

Canedy’s mother said that he recently received a large settlement and was spending the money. He would buy things for himself or others. He had a habit of gifting items to people, but then would try to take them back if he got mad at them, prosecutors wrote.

Canedy has prior felony convictions, including residential burglary and second-degree burglary. He is prohibited from owning or possessing firearms.
