DV suspect who was shot by Pierce County deputies is in critical condition at hospital

A shooting involving Pierce County deputies left a man suspected of domestic violence in critical condition Sunday.

At about 5:34 p.m., deputies were investigating a domestic-violence report from earlier in the day and found the man in a vehicle, according to a Pierce County Force Investigation Team news release.

The News Tribune previously reported the man was suspected of domestic assault with a weapon.

Deputies had probable cause to arrest him for felony harassment, the release said.

The man drove off after deputies began a traffic stop, the release said. The vehicle crashed in the 17300 block of Pacific Avenue South. No other vehicles were struck. Shots were reportedly fired at 5:42 p.m.

Pierce County SWAT officers arrived at the scene and pulled the man from the vehicle, the release said. Deputies treated the man with medical aid until the fire department arrived. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing. The Pierce County Force Investigation Team is leading the investigation, and all involved deputies were placed on administrative leave, which is in accordance with their departmental policies.
