Man killed in New Year’s Day shooting in Tacoma identified, ME reports

A man who was killed in a shooting on New Year’s Day in Tacoma has been identified.

Eugene Cortez Saunders III, 25, died from multiple gunshot wounds in the 3500 block of East Grandview Avenue. His manner of death was ruled a homicide, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office through its information portal.

Saunders’ place of residence was left as “blank.”

Officers were dispatched to the area at about 3:39 a.m. They found a man suffering from gunshot wounds and began lifesaving measures until Tacoma Fire Department personnel arrive, but he died at the scene, according to a police news release.

The News Tribune reported at the time that detectives were on the scene serving search warrants and talking to people.

As of Monday, no arrests have been made.

The shooting was the first homicide Tacoma police responded to in 2026.
