Tacoma man fatally shot by deputies in Parkland identified by medical examiner
A Tacoma man who was killed in a shooting involving sheriff’s deputies in Parkland has been identified, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Alrico Ray Coleman, 34, died on Sunday from multiple gunshot wounds. His manner of death was listed as a homicide, the office reported.
Deputies were dispatched that day at 6:25 a.m. to a grocery store in the area of 112th Street South and Park Avenue South after a 54-year-old man reported he had been stabbed, according to the Pierce County Force Investigation Team in a news release.
Coleman approached the victim and asked about his religious beliefs. Coleman attacked and stabbed the man and his dog after the victim said he was a Christian, the release said.
The victim was taken to an area hospital. The dog was taken to an animal hospital where it underwent surgery. A Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit was used to track Coleman.
At about 8:40 a.m., a deputy spotted him in the 800 block of 112th Street South. He allegedly ran off behind a nearby home.
Deputies followed him and tried to talk to him. He was reportedly armed. and. when he advanced on deputies, shots were fired at 8:47 a.m., the release said.
“Deputies provided medical aid to the suspect until medics arrived,” the release said. “He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.”
No deputies were injured. The Pierce County Force Investigaiton Team took over the investigation as is required when there is a deadly force incident involving law enforcement.
Court records show Coleman has previous convictions. He pleaded guilty in 2016 for second-degree assault and resisting arrest in Lakewood for strangling and assaulting his girlfriend when she tried to break up with him. He was also accused of fighting with officers when they tried to arrest him.
Coleman pleaded guilty in 2021 for two counts of second-degree promoting prostitution. He initially was charged in 2018 with second-degree human trafficking and promotion commercial sexual abuse of a minor, records show.
The News Tribune reported Coleman was accused of advertising a teenager online for sex in Pierce County. A Superior Court judge gave him a high-end sentence of a year, which he had already served.
