Police arrest man in connection with shooting at Tacoma encampment

The Tacoma Police Department arrested an adult man Friday in relation to last month’s fatal shooting at a homeless encampment.

Authorities responded to reports of a shooting near the 1100 block of South J Street at approximately 9 p.m. on April 23, TPD said in a press release.

They arrived to find 32-year-old Khiree Shakur Johnson-Scott injured with a gunshot wound to the chest, the release said. He was rushed to the hospital where was later pronounced dead.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner ruled Johnson-Scott’s cause of death as a homicide, according to the office’s public information portal.

A suspect was taken into custody Friday without incident and booked into the Pierce County Jail on suspicion of a homicide charge, the release said.

“My brother was a brother, he was a father and a son. He called any chance he could get. He did whatever he could to make me smile,” a representative for the family of Johnson-Scott previously told The News Tribune.
