Boy, 13, shot near JBLM has died

A 13-year-old boy shot in the face near Joint Base Lewis-McChord died Sunday night, Lakewood police said.

The boy has not been identified. He died just before 9 p.m. at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, where he was taken after being shot Tuesday.

A 17-year-old boy pleaded not guilty Friday to shooting his friend in the face while a group of boys were walking in a wooded area of JBLM near the 15000 block of Woodbrook Drive Southwest.

He is being held at Remann Hall juvenile detention facility on charges of third-degree assault and unlawful possession of a firearm. Charges had not been amended by Monday morning.

The victim’s brother, who is 14, told police the three boys were walking in the woods when he heard a gunshot. He turned to see his brother lying on the ground and the 17-year-old holding a gun, court records show.

The older boy ran off and allegedly claimed he shot the victim on accident.

He tried to give a backpack containing bloody clothing and a handgun to a friends, records show.

The 17-year-old later told police he and the victim were passing the gun back and forth when it was handed back to him “he fidgeted with it and the gun went off,” the records state.
