Teen pleads not guilty in death of Philip Ryan Jr.

A Tacoma teenager who police believe was involved in a recent killing pleaded not guilty to a murder charge in Pierce County Superior Court on Friday.

Isiah Cavitt, 17, is charged as an accomplice to second-degree murder in the death of 19-year-old Philip Ryan Jr.

Judge Thomas Larkin ordered Cavitt jailed in lieu of $1 million bail.

Ryan died Nov. 7 after being shot near Martin Luther King Jr. Way and South Ninth Street in Tacoma. Prosecutors contend a 15-year-old boy confronted Ryan and then shot him.

Cavitt and two other teenagers who were with the boy at the time of the shooting are charged as accomplices. Cavitt fled to Spokane after the shooting. He was arrested there late last month.

The 15-year-old, also charged with murder, has a hearing next month to determine whether his case will be sent to adult court.
