One man taken to hospital after shooting on Plum Street in Olympia

Police closed the intersection of Union Avenue and Plum Street in Olympia after gunfire Monday night between a car and two pedestrians with skateboards just after 8 p.m.

One male victim was in surgery late Monday and police said he was in critical condition. He was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds to his chest and elbow. He was conscious, saying he had a baby he needed to take care of, when an ambulance took him to the hospital, according to witnesses.

Lt. Paul Lower with the Olympia Police Department said the two pedestrians with skateboards got into an altercation with two people in a car and the car’s passenger fired two rounds from a handgun at the men.

Lower said police had the shooter in custody Monday night, and all parties were cooperating. Lower said it appeared that the shooter called 911 after the incident.

Witnesses initially reported that two men had been shot and taken to the hospital. Lower said only one man was wounded. The other man, who identified himself as the wounded man’s uncle, left with a detective.

Lower said the intersection will be closed until early Tuesday morning.
