Two people in a Palo Alto home heard “banging” on the roof about 6 a.m. and notified police, who found an accused burglar trying to break in, California cops say.

Two people in a home who heard someone walking and banging on their roof early in the morning made the right call by phoning 911, California police say.

Officers responding to the call found a 30-year-old man on the roof trying to break into the home about 6 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, Palo Alto police said in a news release.

The man “had been using a wooden block to strike a skylight on the roof of the home,” but could not shatter it, police said.

He was arrested without incident and faces charges including attempted residential burglary and prowling, the release said.

Police ask that anyone with information call 650-329-2413 or leave an anonymous tip at paloalto@tipnow.org or 650-383-8984.

Palo Alto is a city of 68,000 people just northwest of San Jose in the San Francisco Bay Area.
