A 21-year-old man was arrested after his grandparents were found shot dead in a Texas home, police say.

Officers in Austin were dispatched to the home Saturday, Sept. 21, for a welfare check. But the residents’ grandson, Chevy Kyler Monaghan, refused to open the door for police, according to a news release.

Monaghan met officers in the driveway, telling them his grandparents were inside the home and “unharmed,” police said.

But when officers obtained a key to the home and went inside, they found the bodies of Monaghan’s grandparents, according to investigators.

Anthony Maxa, 76, and his wife, 74-year-old Shari Mallory-Maxa, were found dead in the hallway with gunshot wounds, police said.

An investigation revealed Monaghan killed his grandparents, according to police but investigators did not offer a motive for the killings.

Monaghan was charged with capital murder and jailed in Travis County without bond, jail records show.
