A Texas man has been arrested after deputies say he fatally shot his girlfriend.

Authorities found a 17-year-old girl, later identified as Brittany Dubon, with a gunshot wound on Sept. 29, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a news release. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gonzalez said Dubon’s boyfriend, 21-year-old Tomas Bautista, shot her and took off. He later returned to the scene and was arrested.

Bautista was charged with murder. Attorney information for him was not available.

“Another case of intimate partner violence. This tragic, senseless act of violence at one time ended a life and tore a family apart,” Gonzalez said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The legal age of consent in Texas is 17, according to the Texas State Law Library.

“Many teens are experiencing dating violence and it can lead to deadly consequences. Domestic violence at any age can turn deadly and we all need to do a better job of equipping kids to recognize early signs of abusive behavior,” Gonzalez said.

Dubon was described as a loving daughter. She loved art, makeup and baking, her obituary said.

Google Translate was used to translate the obituary.
