Does US give too much or too little support to Israel? Poll findings break record

A record-high 42% of Americans believe the U.S. is too supportive of Israel, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll. Just 5% believe the U.S. does not offer enough support to the Middle Eastern nation.

A record-high share of Americans believes the U.S. is too supportive of Israel, according to a new Quinnipiac University survey. Most voters are also against the U.S. joining Israel in its conflict with Iran.

The poll comes after President Donald Trump came to Israel’s aid by authorizing a military strike on three Iranian nuclear sites on June 21, following the outbreak of war between the two Middle Eastern countries.

The conflict began when Israel launched a preemptive strike on Iran, citing fears that Tehran was close to developing a nuclear bomb, a claim the Iranian government has denied.

On June 24, Trump announced a cessation of hostilities, writing on Truth Social, “THE CEASEFIRE IS NOW IN EFFECT. PLEASE DO NOT VIOLATE IT!” So far, it has remained in place.

Meanwhile, the U.S. government has supplied billions of dollars in military aid to Israel for its war in Gaza, which has led to the death of some 55,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health officials.

Most of the enclave’s 2 million residents have also been displaced, and many have gone without adequate food and water, according to the U.N.’s Palestinian refugee agency.

Here is a breakdown of the results from the poll, which sampled 979 registered voters June 22-24 and which has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.

U.S. support for Israel

In the poll, 42% of respondents said the U.S. is too supportive of Israel, marking the highest share on record since Quinnipiac University first asked this question in 2017.

Just 5% said the U.S. is not supportive enough of Israel, and a plurality, 45%, said it gives about the right amount of assistance.

The results broke along partisan lines, with a majority of Republicans, 75%, saying the American government provides the right level of support. Most Democrats, 63%, said it is too supportive.

U.S. involvement in Iran conflict

Respondents were also asked for their views on the Trump administration joining Israel in attacking Iranian nuclear sites.

A slim majority, 51%, said they oppose U.S. involvement, while 42% said they support it.

Again, there was a major partisan divide. While 81% of Republicans favored the involvement of the American military, 75% of Democrats opposed it.

That said, fewer Americans took issue with Israel acting on its own to strike Iranian nuclear and military sites.

Half of respondents said they supported Israel’s military strikes on Iran, while 40% opposed them. The vast majority of Republicans, 80%, favored the strikes, while 60% of Democrats opposed them.

Worries about wider war

Following Trump’s bombing of Iran, most Americans are also now worried about the possibility of a war between Washington and Tehran.

The majority of respondents, 78%, said they are either very or somewhat concerned about the U.S. getting drawn into a war with Iran, while 22% said they are not so concerned or not concerned at all.

On this question, there was bipartisan agreement, with 62% of Republicans and 97% of Democrats telegraphing concern.

“American voters, most of whom are not supportive of the country joining in the Israel-Iran conflict, are extremely troubled by the possibility that involvement could metastasize and draw the U.S. into a direct war with Iran,” Quinnipiac polling analyst Tim Malloy said.
