Who were the best high school volleyball players in the state? Coaches release all-state teams

The Washington State Volleyball Coaches Association released its 2017 all-state selections, with plenty from the South Sound included.

Auburn Riverside’s Calley Heilborn was selected as the 4A state player of the year and Capital’s Maia Nichols is the 3A co-player of the year after both led their teams to their classifications’ respective state titles.

Nichols is a sophomore who had 326 kills and 238 digs for the Cougars this season and was a first-team all-3A South Sound Conference selection for the second consecutive year.

Heilborn, The News Tribune’s two-time All-Area player of the year, is signed to play at Western Washington University, and her coach, Chis Leverenz, was selected as the state coach of the year after the school clinched their third state title in the past four years.

The 4A all-state team might as well have been the TNT All-Area team.

It also featured Auburn Riverside setter Ciera Zimmerman, a Colorado State signee, was also on the first team, and so was Emerald Ridge’s 4A SPSL MVP Kava Durr (Colorado State signee), Bellarmine Prpe’s Hannah Pukis (Washington State signee), Curtis’ Kasey Woodruff (Western Washington signee), Kentwood’s 4A NPSL Cascade MVP Haylee Kent, and Puyallup’s Kaitlin Sugai.

Capital’s Katie Turcotte was selected as the 3A state coach of the year and the Cougars had two other players on the first team to go with Nichols. Elise Meath was a first-team setter and Tia Grow earned first-team middle blocker. Mount Tahoma’s Zyonna Fellows (an Arizona signee) was also on the first team.

Tumwater’s Kennedy Croft, a Gonzaga signee and last year’s Gatorade Washington state player of the year, was on the 2A all-state team as an outside hitter and White River’s Megan Vandegrift, a UW softball signee, was a first-team libero.

Charles Wright’s Abbie Jackson, a junior committed to the University of Houston, was selected to the 1A all-stats second team.

Here are the full all-state teams, inculding second team and honorable mention selections:
