UPSET ALERT
Olympia is on its way to the semifinals for the first time since 1998 after upsetting two higher seeds in two days. The first being No. 6 Mariner in the opening round Wednesday, and the latest being 4A West Central District peer Tahoma on Thursday evening. Tahoma had upended Olympia by seven points on Olympia’s home court in an earlier meeting between the two programs in February, but inside the Tacoma Dome, it was the Bears from Thurston County that moved on behind double-digit outings from guard Parker Gerrits (22 points) and forward Andreas Engholm (14), and another clutch performance from guard Mason Juergens, who scored the game-winner and all eight of his points in the closing minutes. Juergens’ uncle, Chris Juergens, happened to play on the 1998 Olympia team, the last Olympia team to reach the semifinal round before this year’s group. The 4A SPSL South champions get what could be their biggest challenge yet in the semifinals, when they play undefeated top seed and defending state champion Mount Si.
DID YOU KNOW?
Following its two convincing wins the past two days, Olympia — on a five-game winning streak since that previous loss to Tahoma in the first round of the 4A West Central/Southwest bidistrict playoffs — is now the only remaining double-digit seed in title contention inside the Tacoma Dome. In fact, the only other double-digit seed remaining in any tournament across the state is the No. 11 Prosser girls — who have upset both No. 6 Port Angeles and No. 5 Archbishop Murphy the past two days — in the 1A bracket.

UPSET ALERT
No upsets here. Each of the four higher seeds in Thursday’s quarterfinals advanced, though there were some close calls. Camas led most of the way against Sumner in regulation, and took the Spartans to overtime before the 4A SPSL champions eventually moved on with a nine-point victory. Eastlake edged Emerald Ridge, and Pasco got by Lake Stevens, but both of those games were decided by a single possession. Woodinville, the tournament’s state runner-up in 2020 and currently on a 24-game winning streak, posted the bracket’s only double-digit victory of the round with a 12-point win over Richland.
DID YOU KNOW?
Three of the four remaining programs in the running for a title are seeking their first state championship in school history. Eastlake won it all in 4A in its only title game appearance back in 2019, but Woodinville, Pasco and Sumner have never held up the trophy. Woodinville has appeared in the 4A title game twice — in 2018 and in the most recent tournament two seasons ago — but lost to Central Valley both times. Pasco is seeking its first title game appearance since its first and only in 1978, when the program lost to Clover Park in the 4A final. Sumner looks to make its first appearance after already collecting what will be a memorable victory against Camas — the win was the first for the Spartans at the state level in their program history.

UPSET ALERT
The repeat meeting between defending state champion Garfield and Auburn — which played each other in a holiday tournament in December, with the previously undefeated Bulldogs earning a nine-point victory — was perhaps the most anticipated game of the weekend inside the Tacoma Dome. The matchup between the bracket’s top two seeds happened earlier than expected — set up by Auburn’s upset loss to Mount Spokane in the regional round, which sent the Trojans to Garfield’s side — but still provided the anticipated thrilling finish. The Bulldogs were leading into the final moments of regulation before Auburn guard Tre Blassingame hit a pair of free throws with 0.8 seconds remaining to force overtime. Auburn guard Tyrell Nichols, who came off the bench, later hit the eventual game-winning 3-pointer with 45 seconds left in overtime. But, it was the Trojans’ defense inside the final 10 seconds that sealed the win. With Auburn leading by two, Garfield forced a turnover, and Bulldogs guard Raphiel Justice drove into the lane. But, he was met in the paint by Auburn’s Dae’Kwon Watson, who drew a charge, then sunk two free throws to close out the 64-60 win.
DID YOU KNOW?
Auburn is headed the state semifinals following a 34-year drought. The last time the Trojans reached this point was 1988, before they lost to Redmond in the 4A bracket. They also reached the 4A semis more than a decade before, but lost to Lincoln during their tournament run in 1975. Auburn has never played for a title. Mount Spokane is looking to make its second championship appearance after advancing to the final back in 2019, breaking up a string of seven consecutive title games played between 3A Metro League rivals. Rainier Beach has advanced to the semis 19 times in its history, and has 13 title game appearances and nine wins, while Seattle Prep is in the semis for the 10th time, has three title game appearances and two wins.

UPSET ALERT
As expected, each of the top four seeds in this bracket — which played their first games in the Tacoma Dome in Thursday’s quarterfinals after earning first-round byes — are moving on to the semifinals. Lake Washington posted a 33-point win over Hermiston, Mead a 19-point win over Stanwood and defending state champion Garfield a 17-point win over Lakeside of Seattle. Arlington had the only close call of the round, surviving a late Snohomish rally — which included four 3-pointers on four possessions in the fourth quarter — to edge the Panthers by three.
DID YOU KNOW?
This bracket is one of only three across the state that still has all four top seeds in championship contention. The other two are playing in Yakima. The top four seeds in both the 2A boys bracket (No. 1 North Kitsap, No. 2 Lynden, No. 3 R.A. Long and No. 4 Pullman) and 1A girls bracket (No. 1 Lynden Christian, No. 2 Nooksack Valley, No. 3 Cashmere and No. 4 Montesano) are also still on track.
