First- and second-team selections for The News Tribune’s 2023 All-Area boys soccer team.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Dean Williams, Puyallup, sr. — 4A SPSL first-team selection and midfielder led the Vikings to the 4A state championship game, scoring 13 goals and tallying 20 assists. Scored two goals and had four assists during Puyallup’s playoff run and was the first shooter and converted all three penalty kick attempts in each of Puyallup’s postseason shootout victories. Blend of skill on the ball, vision and scoring ability often drew double teams from opponents.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Rick Maloy, Tahoma — Coached the Bears to an 18-3-1 record, the 4A NPSL title, the 4A District 3/4 title — which saw the Bears post three consecutive wins over 4A SPSL opponents — and a semifinal appearance and fourth-place finish in the 4A state tournament.
FIRST TEAM
FORWARDS
Zach Jordan, Emerald Ridge, sr. — Physical forward scored a single-season school record and 4A SPSL-high 20 goals and had four assists. West Liberty University commit.
Jaggar Judkins, Bellarmine Prep, jr. — A tireless worker, Judkins earned 4A SPSL offensive player of the year honors after scoring 18 goals and tallying three assists. Widely recognized as the league’s most dangerous goal scorer.
Matt Ludlow, Gig Harbor, sr. — 3A SSC first-team selection forward was one of the Tides’ best statistical players over the course of his career, and also the team’s energy game-changer. Scored 17 goals and had 10 assists this spring. Northwest University commit.
Jake Mackenzie, Central Kitsap, sr. — For the second straight season, the 3A SSC co-MVP scored over 30 goals for the Cougars. Broke the previous single-season goals record of 32 — which Mackenzie set last spring — with 36 goals and 10 assists this season. Two-time TNT All-Area selection.
Joe Nichols, Silas, jr. — 3A PCL offensive MVP set the tone for a Silas team that won the 3A PCL and advanced to the state tournament, constantly moving all over the field, scoring 10 goals and had 10 assists this spring. Skilled on the ball.
Joel Wollin, Mount Rainier, sr. — 4A NPSL co-offensive player of the year led the 4A NPSL in scoring with 28 goals and 10 assists. Cal Lutheran commit.
MIDFIELDERS
Ignacio Brandan, Tahoma, sr. — 4A NPSL co-offensive player of the year led the Bears to 4A NPSL and 4A District 3/4 championships, and a fourth-place finish in the 4A state tournament with 15 goals and nine assists.
Ty Brunner, Sumner, jr. — 4A SPSL first-team selection scored goals in big moments for the Spartans this spring, pacing Sumner to the 4A state first round with 17 goals and 11 assists.
Derek Johnson, Gig Harbor, sr. — 3A SSC co-MVP led the Tides to an undefeated 3A SSC championship, 3A District 3/4 title, 3A state playoffs and 19-1 overall record with 19 goals and 16 assists.
Javier Luevanos, Curtis, sr. — 4A SPSL first-team selection was key in leading the Vikings to a league title and the 4A state first round, scoring six goals and adding 14 assists. Northwest Nazarene commit.
DEFENDERS
Brady Anderson, Puyallup, sr. — 4A SPSL first-teamer was key in the Vikings’ thrilling run to a 4A state title game appearance, and tallied two assists this spring. Two-time TNT All-Area pick.
Ethan Bell, Curtis, soph. — 4A SPSL defensive player of the year tallied four goals and four assists for a Vikings team that won the 4A SPSL title and reached the 4A state first round.
Pedro Monge-Munoz, Thomas Jefferson, sr. — 3A NPSL offensive player of the year scored 12 goals at forward, but also dropped back and played defense when needed this spring. Cal State Bakersfield commit at center back.
Preston Soeum, Franklin Pierce, jr. — 2A SPSL MVP led the Cardinals to a league title and the 2A state quarterfinals, scoring 13 goals and adding 19 assists.
GOALKEEPER
AJ Heichelbech, Tumwater, sr. — 2A EvCo MVP allowed Tumwater to play a three-back system with his distribution and ability with the ball at his feet. Tumwater allowed 1.21 goals per game and had seven shutouts on the season.
