First- and second-team selections for The News Tribune’s 2024 All-Area girls soccer team.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Ella Bach, Puyallup, jr. — A long-striding, lightning-fast forward with the ability to hit shots from anywhere in the attacking third, Bach was usually playing on a different level than most of her peers and was a major reason Puyallup reached the 4A state tournament this year. Three-time 4A SPSL first-team forward had 17 goals and six assists despite missing a chunk of games with injuries. Clemson commit.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Frank Hankel, Curtis — Guided Curtis to a 17-3-2 overall record, a runner-up finish in the 4A District 3/4 tournament and the program’s first state tournament semifinal appearance since 1998.
FIRST TEAM
FORWARDS
Alyce Chappelle, Rogers, sr. — Rogers High’s all-time points leader scored 49 goals in three varsity seasons and completed her high-school career as 4A SPSL Offensive MVP. Idaho commit tallied 19 goals and eight assists in 2024 with an “unmatched drive to compete and score.”
Femke Laudy, Annie Wright, sr. — 1A Nisqually Player of the Year scored 47 goals with 29 assists, but her senior leadership for the Gators program will be remembered as much as her scoring prowess. Led the team in scoring every game, arriving early and leaving late. An opposing coach: “On a different level. … I am convinced she could be playing at a 4A school and would still be dominating. Amazing quality and the weight of her passes are sublime.”
Jaylee Reynolds, Bonney Lake, sr. — 4A SPSL first-teamer was “consistently dangerous and difficult to defend” with 25 goals and seven assists in 11 league matches. Two-time TNT All-Area selection.
Caitlyn Riggs, Auburn Riverside, sr. — 4A NPSL first-team selection scored 18 goals with three assists. Coach Paul Lewis: “A unique athlete with size and speed and has become a constant threat to score on set pieces.” Idaho commit and two-time TNT All-Area pick.
Braelyn Carey, Lakes, jr. — The state’s leading goal scorer prior to season-ending surgery, Carey piled 35 goals and six assists in 16 matches. 3A PSL Nisqually MVP scored four goals five times. An opposing coach: “She single-handedly carried her team… with a torn hip!”
MIDFIELDERS
Sophia Mayne, Curtis, sr. — 4A SPSL first-teamer paced Curtis in scoring in back-to-back seasons with 17 goals and seven assists in 2024. Four-time all-league selection and set-piece finisher powered the Vikings to the state semifinals for the first time in 26 years.
Elizabeth Hayes, Gig Harbor, jr. — 3A PSL Narrows first-team selection posted 18 goals and six assists with standout speed and footwork. Head coach Robyn Saathoff: “She feeds players. She’s not selfish. But she’s hard to predict.” UC Irvine commit.
Kaihea Tuifua, Decatur, soph. — 3A NPSL offensive player of the year plays bigger than her 5-foot-1 frame, an energetic sophomore with 30 goals and 16 assists in 2024. Head coach Sean Davis: “Observes the field (and) finishes very well.”
Elise Miller, Gig Harbor, sr. — Gig Harbor knew a star was born when a freshman-Miller stepped foot on campus in 2021, whose blend of speed, touch-passing, and soccer IQ went on to create a league-MVP player. “All four years, every single year, she consistently stood out,” coach Robyn Saathoff said. “And just watching her play, I never really saw anybody who could contest her.” Tides captain scored 13 goals with 11 assists.
Mary Rodarte, Orting, soph. — Perpetual scoring threat and 2A SPSL MVP tallied 31 goals and 22 assists. Left-footed sophomore was the undisputed engine of the Cardinals offense.
Sierra Wallace, Kentridge, sr. — Chargers’ leading goal scorer keyed a 4A state tournament quarterfinals appearance for Kentridge, scoring 14 goals and adding five assists. First-team 4A NPSL selection.
DEFENDERS
Ivy Korbal, Curtis, sr. — 4A SPSL first-team selection helped post 14 Viks’ clean sheets and was part of a back line that conceded just 10 goals in 22 games. A tenacious 1v1, shutdown defender. Three-time all-league and two-time TNT All-Area selection.
Olivia Sides, Tahoma, sr. — 4A NPSL defensive player of the year helped contribute to the Bears’ 14 shutouts and a defense that conceded just six goals all season. Center back was top set piece option and scored three goals and had two assists. Creighton commit.
Taylor Mentink, Sumner, sr. — 4A SPSL defensive MVP was the leader of a lights out Spartans defense that conceded just nine goals on the season and had 14 shutouts.
Liv Lorella, Curtis, soph. — 4A SPSL first-teamer helped post 14 shutouts and commanded a back line that conceded just 10 goals in 22 games. Standout one-on-one defender was “confident with the ball at her feet.” Tallied 10 assists.
Nae Humphrey, Gig Harbor, sr. — 3A PSL first-teamer constantly marked the opponent’s best player, and won. “She was a wall,” coach Robyn Saathoff said. Tallied 75 steals and scored two goals with speed, aggression. “She shut every single player down.”
GOALKEEPER
Charlotte Lamb, Bellarmine Prep, soph. — An unwavering shot-stopper, strong in the air, technical and composed — Lamb does it all. The 3A PSL Narrows co-MVP posted nine shutouts and carried the Lions to the state tournament. One coach: “Hard to believe she’s only a sophomore, because she was far and away the best goalkeeper I saw this year.”
