Charles Cross beats Seahawks’ estimate of return from surgery by 3 weeks

So much for Charles Cross returning late this month.

He’s already back.

The Seahawks’ starting left tackle was in full pads practicing with his teammates on the first unit during offensive-line drills Monday morning in the 11th practice of training camp. It was less than a week since he left camp to have surgery in Los Angeles for a dislocated ring finger on his right hand.

Instead of the cast he had on while watching practice Friday, Cross practiced with an oven mitt-looking black pad over his right hand. He did individual position drills Monday. Veteran backup “swing” tackle Josh Jones again was the starting left tackle in team scrimmaging Cross watched.

Following practice watched by Seattle-based servicemembers of the United States Coast Guard, Cross even signed autographs for the Coasties using his repaired right hand. Not well and not easily, but he signed with it.

Coach Mike Macdonald said last week when announcing Cross’ surgery the Seahawks expected him back practicing following the final preseason game Aug. 23 at Green Bay. The team has expected Cross will start the season opener Sept. 7 against San Francisco at Lumen Field.

Cross’ return to practice on Aug. 4 makes him starting Week 1 a near certainty, barring a setback or new injury.

Latest starting O-line

Another day, another variation on Seattle’s starting offensive line.

Jalen Sundell was the first-team center. Olu Oluwatimi had taken the lead in the previous three practices there, but he wasn’t seen on the field Monday.

Rookie guard Bryce Cabledue was getting some time as the second-team center.

Anthony Bradford was the starting right guard and took most of the snap there. That’s as he has for the last week while taking a clear lead over Sundell and 2024 third-round draft choice Christian Haynes for that job.
